There is no doubt about it these are some strange and stressful times we are faced with during this COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing and social isolation are the two most necessary steps in managing this crisis. This means we will all be spending a lot of time at home. Sharing your space all day long with others can be quite the challenge. Rolling out a home schooling schedule while trying to work from home and manage all of the household tasks may be leaving you frustrated. You will be spending 90% of your time indoors now. Here are some simple ways to bring some harmony to your space.

Candles

There has always been something so relaxing about a burning candle for me. Of course candlelight in the evening is beautiful but you don’t have to wait until it is dark to enjoy their light. Since the schools have been out due to the COVID-19 situation I have started a new morning routine. I come downstairs and before I get the coffee on I am lighting a scented candle. It is a nice way to begin the day, pause, breathe and set a good intention. This is bringing peace to my mornings during this chaotic time. In the evenings I am lighting candles all over my home after the children have gone to bed. Nothing beats putting your feet up and having a quiet moment for yourself after the little ones are down for the night. Amazon, Sobeys and Loblaws still have plenty of candles in stock.

Plants

Are you absolutely terrible at remembering to water your plants? Well now you don’t really have an excuse do you? Seeing as most of us will be at home for for an extended period of time during the COVID-19 epidemic it could be a great time to experiment with that green thumb. Having live elements around the house brings some nature inside, the pops of colour lift the spirits and plants are well knows to help purify the air. If it makes your space both healthy and pretty then that’s a win win for me. You can even add the plant care onto that lovely home schooling time table!

Essential Oils

I have been a huge fan of my diffuser and essential oils for the past few years now. I have a couple of machines in the house which are always on the go. The oils are great for so many reasons. They purify the air and create a relaxing and healing mood. When the panic and stress of this current COVID-19 ordeal is overwhelming me, I turn on the diffuser and breathe deeply. My favourite blend at the moment is lavender, eucalyptus and lemon. The beautiful smell combined with the deep breathing brings me back to a calm place. The children absolutely love my essential oils too and have fun coming up with their own blends. It only takes a few drops of oil with a cup of water and your diffuser will go for hours. My favourite manufacturers of these products are Young & Living and Saje.

Declutter, Organize & Clean

We are always complaining that we don’t have enough time to do all of things at home that we would like to do. Now we all have time on our hands to bring some order to our homes. Clean those messy drawers. Sort that crazy linen closet. Clear out the pantry. I’m sure you will find some extra long life foods you forgot you had. You can add to these to your food stock pile or save them to donate to the local soup kitchen. When we clean, declutter and organize it brings a sense of calm and relief. Lord knows we could all do with more of these feelings right now. It will also make your space more relaxing and enjoyable.

Special Spot

Find a special place in your home that can be just for you during this time. Surround yourself with all of the things that make you happy. My happy place is by the fire, with a hot cup of tea, with my puppy at my feet. Whether I am working or watching a movie here my happy place keeps me calm. I also like to find a quiet space in my bedroom or the basement where I can roll out my yoga mat and tune into an online workout class with Well&Tight or Saor.

There is nothing like exercise to lift your mood. We need those endorphins now more than ever!

We are all in the same boat at the moment. I am just thankful that I get to be at home with my family. I am doing my best to create some peace and calm in my home while all of this is going on. It gives me comfort and in turn makes the children feel happy, secure and comfortable. That is all that matters for us at this moment in time. I am so thankful to all of the people who are putting their lives at risk out there to keep everything running for us.
