Changing your home decor for the season is surprisingly easy, quick and affordable. You don’t need much to embrace the seasons and make your house feel like a home. Here are my quick tips for having a little fun with seasonal decor.
You may call them throw pillows or accent pillows but I call them cushions. Whatever you want to call them, my addiction to these fluffy little accents is real! But I honestly don’t think these are a bad thing to be addicted to because accent cushions can have a huge style impact without breaking the bank. Pro tip – just purchase the cushion covers to save on storage space. H&M home have beautiful options for all of the seasons starting at only $5-$6 dollars per cover. We are talking the price of a cup of coffee here to change up your home decor!
In the summer I keep my accent pillows light and neutral to go with the breezy summer feeling I like to create in my home. My front window overlooks the beautiful trees of the Humber river so for fall I have taken the colours of the golden autumn landscape inside. I purchased some full and luxurious looking pillows from Homesense in burnt orange & absinthe green. Each Christmas we choose our “Christmas colours of the season” and I will switch in cushions to match our theme.
Side note: people always ask me when is the right time to put up your Christmas decor? I feel that any time after November 11th is great to get in the festive spirit. I usually do a little in my home each day after this date but will always wait until the first week of December before erecting the tree. We love to have a real tree so to keep it fresh I would not suggest getting a live one before December.
Throws and blankets are always a great way to add texture and warmth so a space. In the warmer months I keep it light with turkish towels, linen and cotton. The colder months call for fur, fuzz and some heavier fabrics. Layering these throws in the colours of the season with your accent cushions have a double impact and can completely transform your sofas and accent chairs.
Homesense, Indigo Home, Ikea and H&M Home will be your best friend when looking for affordable seasonal options. Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel also keep gorgeous throws in stock but be prepared to spend a little more here.
The Indigo at Sherway Gardens is also fantastic for seasonal inspiration. Unfortunately we don’t have a H&M Home in The West end but it is worth a trip down to The Eaton Centre to check out the quality and range of the home collection. You can also order online where is it often even cheaper than in-store. Bonus – free shipping when you spend a certain amount.
Artwork is something that most people would not consider switching out too often but I do it all the time. In the summer months I will have framed prints or canvas art with palm trees, summer scenes and coastal vibes on my walls and dressers. I switch out these pieces with some snowy prints and winter landscapes in the colder months. There are so many affordable options for artwork these days. Try Etsy & Minted for beautiful prints. I also like to use Command Strips to avoid putting too many holes in my walls!
Accessories! Bring in the season with your candle sticks and pretty little accent items. Switch the wax candles for the colours of the season to drive your theme further. I like to shop for vintage candle sticks at Value Village and at antique markets. I mix the old and new all of the time for an eclectic feel. I have many gold and brass items in rotation as they work very well for both fall and Christmas. When you are shopping at big mainstream stores the secret to making it your own is to always mix in a few personal and one of a kind items.
There is nothing like having fresh flowers in the house. Even if you don’t change up any of your decor, having a fresh arrangement in your home is always a lovely way to mark the season. In summer I save money with fresh clippings from the garden, dried leaves in fall add to my tablescapes. Bare branches in a large vase with lights is also another cheap and cheerful way to winterize your decor and bring the landscape in. If you feel like leaving the florals and live elements to the pros reach out to Victoria at Thorn Floral. Her stunning creations are like works of art and will always be a stunning addition to your home.
