If you are an adult with a job or a child, or God forbid both then let’s face it, coffee is life. Coffee culture in Toronto continues to evolve. As our addiction to caffeine continues to grow, so does the range of exciting and cozy cafes. Here are my top picks for the best independent coffee shops in The West End.
The Good Neighbour Espresso Bar – High Park North/The Junction
This place is just perfection. The original exposed bricks paired with metallic accents and funky wallpaper create the perfect atmosphere for catching up with friends over your favourite caffeinated beverage. They have delicious, fresh baked goods. This spot is super cozy in the winter but you need to visit the beautiful canopied patio in the summer too. They also keep a lovely selection of gelato in stock for those crazy hot summer days…
Jules Patisserie Cafe – The Kingsway/Sunnylea
This is the go to spot for catch ups with friends and business meetings over decadent classic french pastries in The Kingsway. Jules’ is very spacious with plenty of room for groups and Moms and Dads who need space for their strollers (a rare find in Toronto!). The staff are extremely friendly and will remember your coffee order. They make families and small children feel very welcome. Above all else the coffee is great and ALL of the classic French food and pastries are absolutely perfect.
Reunion Island Coffee – Roncesvalles
This beautiful little gem is located in the one of the nicest corner lots right in the heart of Roncesvalles. This is my favourite Saturday morning spot. Taking in the ever vibrant Roncy atmosphere over good coffee and a yummy cookie is what great Toronto weekends are all about. The owner of this establishment has been a trailblazer and important proponent of ethical, organic and sustainable coffee trade. The decor is just the right balance of white, bright and live greenery. This space ticks all the boxes. Great product, aesthetically pleasing and run by entrepreneurs with heart. A+ all round…
Crema Coffee Co. – The Junction
Crema Coffee care about delivering a quality product. According to Crema, “Making good coffee is tough. And making great coffee is a science and an art”. This cute corner cafe captures the essence that is “The Junction Living”. Their all natural pastries are baked fresh every day. They encourage you to lounge and stay a while. You will feel so comfortable here that you will definitely take them up on this offer.
Golden Gecko Coffee – Baby Point
This place is so much fun. The owner is the best! The coffee is great. The Golden Gecko has brought so much energy and community spirit to Baby Point. Here they are working hard to collaborate with local businesses and community groups. There is even a specialized reading nook for kids and young adults who would like to unplug. Flat whites, smoothies and yummy treats served in this wonderful social space is what community is all about. I love supporting businesses who see the bigger picture.
Baka Gallery Cafe – Bloor West Village
Baka has been a staple in the Bloor West community for the past few years. This spacious cafe’s Barista’s have been trained by the best. Their weekend brunches are fresh and fantastic. The large patio has a great atmosphere in the warmer months. The space also doubles up as an event space and gallery for a range of exciting talents and groups. They also have wine in this cafe, I repeat, they also have wine.
Let me know where you decide to go for your next hot fix. Feel free to tag @leahamira on instagram when you visit any of these great places, I would love to share your posts! Wherever you have your next cuppa, I hope it is a delicious one!
